Elementary, my dear Watson. It's magic, active staff, and active development. Sort of like that milkshake song...we could teach you, but we would have to charge!

phpBB 2.x was incredibly popular and is still used in many places today (the Gentoo forums still used it until a few weeks ago even). Like many other forums running this software, it has had many modifications to add features and fix bugs/security holes.

For example, you may have noticed Cloudflare's Turnstile when you registered for this place. That's one of the enhancements added to help keep some of the bots out. In the Announcements forum, there's a changelog which outlines a lot of what has been added to it.

The first forum I ever joined uses phpBB 2.x, you can still find posts on that forum from when Tapatalk was more popular. Honestly it's my favorite forum software and I find it easier to use than things like Discourse.

The other really nice thing is that I've had great luck with older/less capable browsers and phpBB. I love being able to check the forum on my SPARCstation and Netscape 4.x! Very Happy

I think the first forum I joined was WinBoards, back when that was a thing. I'd be willing to bet that was also pbpBB 2 of some flavor, given it looked almost exactly like this.

Hah, I've been on WinBoards on and off since 2006 (though I had a different name back then). That was a phpbb 2.x forum for a long time, using a modded version of the smartDark theme (like this forum).

Yeah I think I was on there maybe 2008 to 2014? At some point a guy with a Yoda avatar IP banned me from the entire site because he didn't like my low res Bill Gates profile picture at the time.
An admin, I think his name was duff? emailed me afterwards and said the guy was having a bad day and to come back later, but I never bothered.

lol, I know exactly which staff member banned you. They haven't been with WinWorld for a number of years now.

I'd heard that a couple years later, but I never returned, half because I had found other places and half because when I heard that they had already done their site-wide update to the new theme, which I didn't really like
