This will be the start of the old web resource post. This post will contain links to old web portals and software that can get you browsing the old web again.

Links to browse from your retro PC:
Here are some links to get you surfin' like it's the 90's

Old web:

  • [Wiby.me] - Wiby is a Google-esque search engine that is tailored to search old web pages. Simply type what you're looking for like you would in Google, or hit "surprise me" for a random page!
  • [Theoldnet.com] - Uses archive.org's wayback machine to pull websites up to browse.

Nostalgic recreations:

  • [Neocities.org] - Neocities is a website that relives the days of Geocities. A lot of the sites here tend to reminisce of the old web and model site design after it. Some sites here may not be compatable with your browser on your retro PC. If you want a free website of your own, this is the place to go!

Getting online from your retro PC:
A list of software and tutorials to help get you browsing from your beige box!

Software:

  • [K-Meleon] - K-Meleon is a lightweight, customizable, open-source web browser. It's designed for Microsoft Windows (Win32) operating systems. In my experience it handles really well on Windows 98!
  • [Supermium] - Supermium is a drop-in replacement for Google Chrome with privacy and usability enhancements, optimized for legacy and modern Windows systems alike. Works well on Windows XP and above.

Quick Download Links:
Some web browsers, even some of the ones designed to work on retro PC's, have issues with the new web. There are some sites that have some valuable information or software that is hard to reach because the site sits inbetween web technologies. You may be able to access it, but it doesn't load correctly.

This list is direct links to software from websites that are stuck between web generations bypassing the need to visit them to get the download.

K-Meleon hasn't been updated in ages, and a lot of modern sites either don't work at all or they're extremely broken.

I personally recommend Supermium. It's a Chromium-based browser that's designed to run on systems as old as Windows XP. I know most people like to hate on Chromium-based browsers, and that the browser won't run on anything older than XP, but this browser is a modern and reliable option to pick. I highly recommend it.

Here's the link to the browser's website: http://win32subsystem.live/supermium/
