I gotta be honest, having now bothered to make a second account just to try out Discord Messenger, which is something I've been meaning to try for a while, this is fantastic.

Performance is absolutely stellar given the hardware it's on, it's been pretty stable, almost all the features I personally care about are present and accounted for.

This has increased the daily usefulness of this machine from a solid 2/10 easily all the way to a 6/10 for me. The extra utility is incredible. At this point, I'm now actively searching for a modern-ish browser and email client that will run on a P4 under Windows XP, and looking into youtube downloaders. Signs on youtube playback seem good at a glance. It has suddenly become a very real possibility that I relegate my Ryzen to the shadows simply for the occasional game or video editing and stay here on XP like I was doing until just a few years ago when Discord and YouTube both dropped support for old firefox.

The only thing I can wish for is a Classic Mac OS port. Maybe someday!

Yeah DiscordMessenger is amazing. It really goes to show how poorly optimized these modern electron apps are. As for browsers, you can try supermium (win32subsystem.live), but I suspect performance will be slugish on a P4. Might be at least worth a try though.

It honestly works great. There are some minor bugs with it, like it appears some offset or something is wrong when trying to pull screenshots from the clipboard, but for the most part it works really well.

I use it on my 9x and 2000 machines all the time. Maybe I'll try and dig into the screenshot issue soon...

Right, Electron absolutely blows. It's such a shame so many services are going to it. I much prefer the days of local applications that actually take advantage of MY hardware instead of running on some black box somewhere in California.

It appears that the website for Supermium you linked is actually detected as a phishing site by my ISP, and so I cannot access the page.

I tried Firefox 52ESR, which is the last version to officially support Windows XP, and while it does function for the most part, it's still old enough to have dwindling web support... And it absolutely crawls. Just moving the cursor is sluggish when it's open, hence why I'm using Netscape 9 for the things that can use it (really fast and has a UI I adore) and then Opera 12 for the things that can't.

I'm gonna give a bunch of other homebrew browsers a try today and see what is and isn't feasible on this machine.

Interesting, screenshots across all 3 monitors work great here in XP. It crashes on startup for me every time, the second run of the application always seems to get it, though. Maybe one in 20 channel changes it will give me a connection error as well, which goes away if you change channels once more.

[quote="VCSMaster"]having now bothered to make a second account /quote]

You don't really have to make a second account for that sort of stuff, unless you're paranoid about getting your main account banned. I use Discord Messenger and other custom discord clients with my main account all the time and i'm still not banned. Very Happy Though the risk of getting banned is still there, even if it's very low, so I understand why you made a secondary account.

With that being said, this program is absolutely amazing. I use it on my Windows 2000 and XP virtual machines, as well as on my shitbox Compaq Presario CQ56 (which is running Windows 7 btw) and it's so damn smooth.

The only issues I have with it is that videos, gifs, links and audio files don't embed, there's no voice chat functionality, there's very few themes and they all look very similar to each other, I can't react to messages, emoji support is rough and I can't change essential settings like my pfp, name and stuff like that, but other than that it's surprisingly usable. This has become a must-have for me.

You don't have to create a second account, but it's a good idea. Discord doesn't directly ban for custom clients, but a lot of custom clients tend to accidentally spam API calls when doing certain things, and that will activate Discord's anti-API abuse mechanisms.

that, and typically certain actions (like starting a new DM or joining a server) tends to set off anti-spam measures more often than not

Which is why DiscordMessenger does not implement those features, I believe stated in the readme but I'm not sure.

Discord's ToS explicitly says custom or modified clients are a ban-able offense, and just because they choose not to enforce it with an iron fist, does not mean they won't just decide to someday. There's no harm in having an alternate account for this purpose and it protects my other two accounts in the event that something happens.

Given the way Discord has been going, I would not put it past them to decide to bring the hammer down sooner rather than later.

Yeah, runs fine on Me and XP on my PIII, XP on my P4HT, and Vista on my Phenom, though that last machine is stout enough to use the normal web browser client.

Multimedia support sucks for everything. There's a lot of codecs and of course a large portion of the machines running this software probably will not be able to actually play most of the video uploaded to Discord. I would imagine GIFs would just be a huge slowdown. Audio is probably more doable but who knows if the connection a machine has is good enough to actually stream it? Honestly, given the difficulty of the task, especially on the given hardware expectations, we're lucky to get image embedding the way we did. Links seem to embed just fine for me(?)

The developer has talked about adding voice, but it does not seem like it will happen, since it seems like a real pain to do in 9x.

Keep in mind that emojis as they exist in Discord are either tiny embedded images or UTF characters. Be aware that 9x without some modestly invasive changes does not support UTF directly, and no font shipped with even up to XP I believe actually contains any emoticons at all. The developer would have to bundle his own UTF junk and a custom font to make that work - AND support custom images along with it! This is just not convenient or feasible, so I totally understand why the support is limited. Of course, this same problem applies to reactions.
Personally, I use very few of either, so this doesn't bother me.

I believe that support for changing usernames did briefly exist, but that people were getting banned for botting when using it, so it was dropped. I am not sure if profile pictures were ever even considered. How often are you changing these, though, that you need it directly in the client? I think this is a reasonable thing to be left out.

Agreed, it's definitely nice to have, and dramatically increased my usage of the machines that I threw it on.

Well, now that Discord is rapidly becoming a no-go, I'll have to seek out a Matrix client or something that supports old machines. Rats! It was a good couple months, at least.
