honestly my biggest issue is that not many people are gonna switch. i personally love chatting in quite large communities,
and i feel like some of them just would not be the same without even a few members. but you cant truly expect EVERYONE you know to suddenly switch,
which leads to me not switching which leads to my friends not switching.
its quite a twisted cycle honestly and it happens to most alternatives to most platforms
but to those who manage to switch good on them honestly. _________________

I only have a couple people I regularly talk to on Discord anyways. The communities I run have already expressed fairly widespread support for switching, so I don't feel too bad about dumping Discord. I'll just make the server one read only channel redirecting to Fluxer or Matrix or whatever for people with the old link. |

If we need to send pictures we upload them to the server or a temporary file host. For videos there is Watch2Gether.
But the true contender would be Xfire (Xf1re now). Voice chat is in the works and soon will be available to everyone.
Last one is CrossTalk, with MSN/WM got Plus! so you can make calls and group chats. Skype is also in the works so more and more options are becoming available. |
Almost none of my time on Discord is spent in voice, so that's not something I am particularly pressed about. Even less on screen share or other video type calls.
We have been using Discord like a forum - It's a nice, organized, searchable thing with multimedia. I find IRC is not good enough at the multimedia part, and channel organization isn't great either. That's why I was considering phpBB an option! Crosstalk and Xf1re both appear to suffer from very similar problems - Not great for large (200+ users) multimedia forums. |
Well, that's just how pre-Discord was like. I used Skype for casual calls, TeamSpeak for clan stuff and forums for guides, media and file share. Decentralized communication has advantages but "all in one" is not one of them.
In my case it's not a problem because Discord has become so garbage that I rarely use it for anything other than checking out new updates for two games. It's slow, cumbersome and without paying for Nitro you are also limited as hell - multimedia especially. I also hate the fact that they don't offer a dedicated server software like TS does. And that 1Gb+ RAM usage is a sin on it's own. _________________

Fuck to "all-in-one" media platforms! Return to the 90's. _________________ I do stuff with things for reasons.

I'm aware, yeah, but it's a little difficult to run a community full of people reverse engineering parts based on pictures and videos if it's overly difficult for those people to share the pictures and videos, or the resulting information. Multimedia and message history are super important here, far above anything else. |

I mean, I guess. I've thought about hosting a real small invite-only file sharing thing myself before, but I don't think I have enough disk space to make it worth anyone's time, and certainly not the uptime necessary at this point. Spectrum can't get my internet stable and my brand new UPS died after 32 days in service. Ouch! |

How do you expect people to switch when these platforms offer so much "convenience"? _________________ Why can't the internet be colorfull again?
