Hi all,
I'm new to the site, having found it on a list of sites suitable for older computers. Currently signed on with my Toshiba Libretto and working my way about to get a feel for the place.

Thank you everyone for the welcome!
I'll have to upload some photos of the Libretto once I've got one of the old digital cameras able to talk to it, or one of the older laptops that kick around here anyway.
It's a nice little machine anyway. Plan is to rebuild the battery at some point so that I can use it without being tied to a plug socket of some description.

Which Libretto do you have? I have 3x 50CTs and one 70CT that has the 32MB RAM expansion. Runs Windows 2000 "okay-ish"
The last time I tried to use them about 6 years ago, I still had a few fully working batteries. Who knows if that's the case anymore.
As for websites, you could look at "retronetwork.net" which maintains a webring and some small lists of compatible sites. There's also the Sloop classic website directory, FrogFind, and Old'A'Vista. |

Hi again folks,
I've had a little bit of time away doing various life-related things. As promised though, is a photograph of my 1996 Toshiba Libretto 50CT. Taken on a Konica Revio KD-3300 digital camera, as my 1996 Kodak DC25 won't play nicely with the modern (2012) laptop.
N.B. - you may have to open the image in a new tab...
There's more to it than this image though, I've got the floppy disk drive, a port replicator, the network card (pictured - D-Link DE650 I think), and it's all kept inside a lovely little Case Logic bag alongside the laptop. Said network card is also how I normally access the site from the Libretto. Although I'm coming to you all now from my 2012 HP Elitebook 8460p.

I've got the port replicators, docks, floppy drives, extended batteries, almost everything you could have ever wanted. Even have a NOS iomega Clik! drive to go with it. |

The plastic is too brittle and if you ask me they're a little unpleasant to use. I have better UMPCs these days to play with |

Fully agreed, the plastic is a nuisance and afflicts the other Toshibas that use the same colour plastic from that era. My slightly newer black/grey plastic Portege 7020CTs (I've had two) never really suffered from this, but the LCD ribbon cable on the first one went.
They're a bit inconvenient to use, it's more of a novelty than a machine you can properly 'daily drive', I've got a P3 desktop and a ThinkPad 600E for my retro internet needs.

Ouch, a ThinkPad 600E? Isn't that machine worse about degrading plastics but with the addition of sticky rubber?
Same terrible pointing device if I recall. I threw my 600E in the garbage probably 10 years ago. |

I quite like it. I got it and another two for free about 5 years ago, and built a functional machine out of those three. It's been rock solid for me, sticky plastics have been attacked with isopropyl alcohol and an old bank card. Plastics themselves are absolutely fine except for the small strip where the LED indicators live, but I was a bit heavy handed when refitting that.
If it dies, there's a Toshiba Portege 7020CT here that'll take its place, and after that I could be a bit stuck...

| Interesting. Mine was sticky enough you could hold it with an open hand, and the first attempt to clean it resulted in the palmrest and display hinges shattering, at which point I pulled the memory, disk, and the Pentium II before discarding it |
