Hello folks,
Before I properly introduce what I'm on about here, I wasn't really sure which section this was meant to go in - so happy for it to be moved if I've made an error. Anyway, let's get started.
The Sony Mavica line, I'm sure most (if not all of you) will be familiar with. I'm an avid amateur photographer, whether that's digital or film, and usually digital for cost reasons. I absolutely love the technological madness and ease of use that comes with these Mavicas though, and as such, am setting up a site (that's also old computer friendly) to act as a cache of information relating to the floppy diskette versions of these. I present to you all (in time), Mavica World!
There are, of course, the CD ones and the earlier 2.0" floppy ones, but they're outside of my interest and catchment at the moment. I've got the domain, I'm slowly building the site up in Microsoft FrontPage, and hoarding documentation and other stuff.
Mucho research going on. Yes, all of this stuff is available in different bits of the 'net, but it's usually on subreddits and modern websites - and we definitely have a gap for something that'll open on a Cyrix MII.
I'm able to document the following models thanks to either owning them, or knowing people who own them:
FD71, FD75, FD81, FD85.
Anything that isn't these, that you guys may have, I'd appreciate input on... and photographs! The crunchier, the better. Even things like official Sony lens filters and accessories too. Battery charger and MS to Floppy adaptor I've covered already too, although photos of the latter are still needed.
I'll have the site up when I've got as much of it assembled as I can (and my friend finalises his self-hosting setup).

Thanks in advance folks. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

Don't worry, you got the right section. We don't have a category for cameras, so this would fall under hardware.
Never owned a Mavica though, someone else on here probably does though.
Defs keep the thread up though, it'll be noticed soon. _________________ I'm one day closer to being who I wanna be~ |

Thank you! That makes me feel better
Once my friend (who really should join here) has the webhosting up, I'm looking forward to getting the site running. I'm documenting basic info about the camera specifications, documentation (manuals etc), accessories, and also sample images.
It's not going to include everything, but it'll hopefully be of use to at least someone. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

god, i've really wanted to get a Mavica as well. i love taking photos on old crappy digital cameras hopefully the Motorola Droid i ordered recently will satiate that desire though. the only other phone cameras i have are either too new (so they look fine), or in the case of my Windows Mobile phone, has such an awful camera you can't make out anything with it _________________ - parasquared

Hey there from a fellow amateur photographer! I have a Mavica FD75, which I have used extensively. I know nick99nack has a number of Mavicas as well, so he might have stuff to add here as well. I love what you're doing here! _________________ Your System ate a SPARC! Gah! |

Awesome! I'd love to see some of the photos you've taken with it. Good to hear Nick's got some too. I was in a fierce eBay auction for a really cheap FD5 last night but was unfortunately beaten by £1... I'm still annoyed.
My first Mavica was an FD75. I swapped it for a Powermac G3 in the end. I'm currently using an FD81 but I've got an FD71 coming that lacks a battery. Untested, hopefully just due to lack of battery, and not it being broken...

I miss my FD75. I think I'd taken over 1,000 photos with it. Since the swap, the new owner has reported back that it's decided to stop recognising disks. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

I second this! It'd be pretty cool to have. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

Haha, it's the reason I've "rage-bought" the FD71. You should get one though, the FD71, 73, or 75 I recommend as starting points - they're all fairly similar.
Thank you! I like the limitation of 0.35 megapixels sometimes, I find myself focusing more on just having fun with it. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

Definitely! I need to put a photo gallery on my website, but here's the raw directory listing presently. And I know that pain all too well.

Oh yeah for sure, wishing you the best on that!

Aw darn, I wonder if the drive has gone completely or just needs to be cleaned. _________________ Your System ate a SPARC! Gah! |

Thanks!
I had a look and those photos are really good - I loved my FD75.
Hoping Finn will be able to fix it by giving it a good cleaning at least. These Mavicas sold pretty well in the UK and are still fairly easy to find - even if it came to finding another.
The Powermac he gave me... that's for another thread, . _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

I've began cobbling something together using Microsoft FrontPage 2003. It should be compatible with IE4 or newer, but I shall try to test this once web hosting is up. I'm hoping to have the hosting thing sorted out by the end of this week.
I've chosen a colour palette for the site using mostly pinks, purples, and yellows (not including the logo, of course), which I think appears quite nice on the eyes without making you want to claw your own out.
There's obviously more to it, as I've got a tabled section for the models etc, but this is just a vague idea of how it should look. _________________ That sounds irresponsibly silly and is therefore, clearly, something I am likely to almost always do. |

Thank you! I hope he can too, the FD75 is my first and only Mavica and I love it to bits. Also yeah, Power Macs are tricky beasts lol - is it a beige or blue and white?
Website looks awesome so far, btw _________________ Your System ate a SPARC! Gah! |
