| I've gotten my Athlon XP system that I'm using as my main computer to run Windows 3.11 for WorkGroups. So far it's been alright, I managed to remember about the open source VESA driver that exists, which works great to get me to 24 bit color on here. I don't have a solution for audio, as the motherboards chipset is AC'97 but I can't find a driver that works. The networking though, oh my god. Turns out the NDIS Driver for DOS that I can install via network configuration panel doesn't work as the MS TCP integration requires a period correct system, so I have to load the packet version of the driver and then winpkt.com so that I can use Trumpet Winsock to get networking on here. To top it off, I'm writing this from Opera 3 on said installation! |

Jeez that's an overkill machine for 3.x. I know people browsing the classic web on 3.1 via 286 lol
AC'97 audio isn't "real" audio, it's basically just a DAC and expects the CPU to feed it every sample is my understanding. Windows 3.x can do this but really hates to. You also won't get any sort of MIDI output at all, just wave output. I bet you could mod the PC speaker driver to run it, if you wanted. |
