Currently SteamOS is in it's SteamDeck phase. The older version of the desktop style OS are no longer supported.

Supposedly you can install this distro on any PC, it doesn't have to be a deck, but I haven't had any luck getting a usb drive to boot any release for install.

There is a couple ways around this, distros like bazzite and co are fedora and arch, etc distros with the steam deck (gamescope) gui on top

you can also make your own steamdeck like look and feel on oses like nixos with projects like jovian-nixos

in terms of booting steamOS on hardware that isnt the deck, one thing that makes a massive difference is the gpu

if youre on nvidia, forget it, i dont think even nouveau is in the kernel let alone nvidia or nvidia-open

and if youre on amd, i know 5xx cards and i think vega will not output iirc?

thats my input on this, most of this is from personal experience as i have a deck running nixos using jovians awesome flake input
