If you are like me, you miss the days of going online and chatting with friends on AIM and AOL. Well, with NINA, it's back! All versions of AIM are supported, even the Android and iOS clients. I am usually online on AIM, versions 4.7 through 5.9 depending on what computer I'm using.
AOL is currently in alpha release, supporting AOL 4.0 and 5.0, with more coming soon...
There's a lot of exciting stuff happening, hope to see you there! _________________ If you like browsing without an ad blocker, you might also like getting rid of your virus scanner, and running around with your pants down. --SomeGuy, 2016 |

I may have to give this a try. What's the compatibility like? For the most part, my retro shenanigans are limited to Windows Me/XP and Mac OS 8.1 (68k) / 9.2
Would love to have a nice dedicated chat client that can sync over all of them.
Anyone tried it over dial up yet? |

Every version of AIM is supported, as well as the Windows versions of AOL 4.0 and 5.0, though they are in alpha and currently only available to supporters.
As far as compatibility, there are versions of AIM for pretty much every version of Windows, going back to Windows 3.x. There are also clients for Linux and MacOS. AOL 4.0 can be run on most versions of Windows, including a 16-bit version for Windows 3.x. 5.0 is 9x and up.
Over dial-up, everything works just fine (after all, AOL was designed with dial-up in mind). You will currently have to dial your own connection first though - the built-in AOL dialer won't work for this. _________________ If you like browsing without an ad blocker, you might also like getting rid of your virus scanner, and running around with your pants down. --SomeGuy, 2016 |

I kinda figured - But I wasn't sure if they were like many modern web services that claim to be retrocomputer friendly, and rely on some kind of network timer that hates the latency of a dial-up connection.
I suppose getting AIM running on my machines would not be a terrible idea. Maybe I will look into this at some point over the holiday weekend. |

This service is now dead. Keep an eye on CrossTalk for your retro messaging needs.
With that, I will lock this thread.
