Here is my restored Gateway Essential 450! I got it from a friend who's parents had it in their office in a desk cabinet they haven't touched in ages. When he went to pick it up, IT WAS STILL ON. He was going to toss it but I said I'd take it. I got it home, cleaned it up and ran a test on it. The drive was dead, click of death. I put in a SATA drive using an IDE to SATA adapter and started adding operating systems. I then added cards to it. Hardware specs and parts I've added below.

Pentium III @ 450MHz
768 MB of RAM
ATI Rage 128 Pro 4XL
Aureal Vortex with Soundblaster Pro emulation
DAVICOM 9102/A PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

500GB SATA HDD (I'm using an IDE to SATA adapter)
CD/DVD Drive
Floppy Drive
Iomega ZIP-100 Drive

IBM KB-7953 Keyboard and Logitech M-BE58 Pilot Wheel Mouse
Samsung SyncMaster 151s Flat Panel Monitor

DOS 5.00, Windows 98 SE, and Windows XP (I use Acronis as my boot manager)

I use a VGA splitter with a USB VGA Capture device to stream my retro PC and record videos. The laptop there is transferring files to a shared drive on the Gateway.

And of course you can't have a Windows 98 machine without Half-Life!

I had Win 2k on it at one point in time but it corrupted itself and I didn't feel like reinstalling it.

I do plan on partitioning some space out for some old linux distros.

Any suggestions?

Sweet machine! I've only had one Gateway, and that was an AMD that came with Windows Me.

I wonder how an old version of Red Hat would run on that.

Oh wow, my parents had an E450 that our uncle gave to us for free circa maybe 2007. I seem to remember it working "okay" until I did something to break it. I seem to remember it spending some time in safe mode, and then at some point it never POSTed again. Video error every time.

I still have the board somewhere, ironically of all the things from that machine, the only good part remaining is the video card, an ATi Radeon 7500 DDR.
