So I've been getting into Shin Megami Tensei these last few days. More specifically: Devil Survivor and Strange Journey.
Strange Journey is a first-person dungeon crawler about a research team who gets stuck in a mysterious area in North Pole. It features the standard Shin Megami Tensei demon contact and fusion systems. Its gameplay reminds me a lot of Persona 1's one, which is nice to see.
My only complain about Strange Journey would be that it takes you over 40 minutes to get into actual gameplay. Before that, you have to scroll through lots of text. But ignoring that, it's an excellent game with many hours of gameplay.
Devil Survivor on the other hand is a tactical RPG. I'd call this game "Persona without the Jojo's part" because it revolves around some teenagers who discover a Demon Summoning program and have to prevent catastrophic events from happening.
The gameplay is a bit different from traditional SMT games: You have to move your characters across a board (similar to Fire Emblem games) and you can only have two demons summoned for each character. Battles are shorter too, with only one turn for each side, and you cannot contract demons, you have to buy them through auctions.
Despite this, most mechanics such as weaknesses and demon fusions are still there. Its soundtrack is also filled with bangers. |
